FilOil semis fires off today


Four teams will be battling for two seats in the finals when the FilOil Flying V Pre-season Premier Cup 2016 semifinals unfold today at the San Juan Arena.

Arellano University faces National University at 2 p.m. while De La Salle University takes on Ateneo de Manila University at 4 p.m.

La Salle went unbeaten in seven games in the group stage while Ateneo wrapped up the elimination round with a 4-3 win-loss card.

The Green Archers defeated reigning University Athletic Association of the Philippines champion Far Eastern University, 91-71, in the quarterfinals to secure their slot in the semis.

The Blue Eagles, on the other hand, booked their trip to the Final Four at the expense of University of Perpetual Help System DALTA, 68-59.

In the previous meeting, La Salle rolled over Ateneo, 98-66, through the help of the frontline trio of Ben Mbala, Jeron Teng and Abu Tratter.

The Chiefs finished the preliminary round with five wins and two losses while the Bulldogs took a record of six wins and a defeat.

Arellano completed its ascent to the Final Four with a convincing 86-79 victory over dethroned champion San Beda College in the quarterfinal round.

Star guard Jiovanni Jalalon carried the Chiefs to their first-ever appearance in the semifinals with 21 points, 10 assists, eight rebounds and five steals.

NU, for its part, snatched a seat in the Top Four after trouncing Adamson University, 65-57, through the efforts of Med Salim and big man Alfred Aroga.

In the group stage, the Bulldogs scored a slim 68-65 win over the Chiefs.
