Fire guts 1,000 homes

A huge fire engulfed a neighborhood in Tondo, Manila after the New Year revelry, razing at least 1,000 houses.

The blaze that affected 3,000 families was believed caused by a small firecracker called rocket.

Two persons were reported to have died in the fire, one of them identified as Danilo Francisco, 45.

Firemen found Francisco’s charred remains at 10 a.m.

“He was beyond recognition. We discovered him after the fire was put out,” said SFO2 Edilberto Cruz, an arson investigator.

The fire tore through the homes of squatters in Barangays 155 and 160 in the city’s District 2. It took firefighters seven hours to put out the blaze.

Fire Marshall Supt. Jaime Ramirez of THE Manila Fire Bureau said the fire started at 3 a.m.

Investigators have yet to confirm if a wayward firecracker caused the fire that started at the rooftop of Louie Basa.

Four residents were injured but were declared out of danger.
