First Ibaloi fest in Baguio today

BAGUIO CITY: With the theme, “Sustaining Our Heritage, Taking Pride In Our Ibaloi Identity”, the 1st Ibaloi Festival kicks off today with a cultural parade starting 8 am from the Baguio Convention Center to the Ibaloi Heritage Garden at Burnham Park here. The Ibalois are the original inhabitants of Baguio whose numbers are quickly diminishing in a city now populated mostly by people who trace their roots to the lowlands or other regions. Free workshops by cultural masters will teach the Ibaloi dialect, rituals and practices such as the proper way of wearing native costumes and playing instruments like the solibao and gangsa. There will be Ibaloi poetry reading and demonstrations on how to prepare “tafey” or the Ibaloi rice wine.  Songs and chants will also be performed. The Ibaloi Festival will culminate on February 23, Ibaloi Day.
