• Fisherman killed as boat sinks in Zamboanga


    ZAMBOANGA CITY – A fisherman died but five of his companions were rescued on Saturday after their boat sank in bad weather off a coastal village of Zamboanga City, officials said over the weekend.

    Officials said the body of Efren Macaso was recovered off Limpapa village. His companions, four them all minors, were saved by fellow fishermen.
    The rescued have been identified as Ismael Asmud, 53; Nikieoy Inglan, 13: Beejay Inglan, 14; Aris Jay Rodero, 11; and Narjie Hampac, 13.
    Officials said the six were fishing when huge waves battered their small boat and causing it to capsize on Saturday.
    The rescue of the five fishermen came a day after a group of sailboats also capsized in turbulent waters off Santa Cruz Islands. One fisherman, Sonny Hallim, 41, is still missing and feared dead.
    Officials said 13 others had either been rescued or swam to safety. AL JACINTO
