FIVE soldiers were wounded in a clash between government troops and a group pf New People’s Army (NPA) rebels in a remote village in Surigao del Sur province early Wednesday.
Reports reaching the Philippine National Police (PNP) on Thursday national operations center in Camp Crame identified the wounded soldiers as Corporal Saham Baginda; PFC’s Wilmer Martinez, Louie Baldivino, Renan Villarino and a certain Tagbe, all members of the Army’s 36th Infantry Battalion.
The reports added that encounter occurred at about 9:30 a.m. within the vicinity of Barangay Siagao, San Miguel town in Surigao del Sur.
Reports said that the soldiers were on a combat patrol in the said area when their vehicle hit a landmine. After the explosion, unknown men immediately fired at the soldiers triggering a firefight between the two forces.
The firefight lasted for about ten minutes before the rebels withdrew and fled to unknown directions.
The five wounded soldiers, who sustained gunshot and shrapnel wounds, were immediately rushed to the hospital for treatment.
Meanwhile, elements of the San Miguel Police station have set-up checkpoint operations in the area. The police are also checking hospitals and clinics for patients with gunshot wounds. ANTHONY VARGAS
