Floods prompt state of calamity declaration in Cotabato City

COTABATO CITY – The rain-swelled Rio Grande de Mindanao has flooded 11 of 36 barangays in this city, prompting the municipal government to declare a state of calamity on Saturday.

One of the severely affected villages is Rosary Heights 6, City Councilor Bruce Matabalao said.

Aside from city, several towns in the provinces of North Cotabato, South Cotabato, and Maguindanao were also heavily flooded, according to reports.

Governors Esmael Mangudadatu and Emylou Taliño-Mendoza of North Cotabato have met their respective provincial disaster councils to take up appropriate measures needed to prevent villagers in low-lying areas from being caught in surprise.

Officials said hundreds of Cotabato City residents have fled to safer grounds while others were packing their belongings and preparing to evacuate Saturday.
