    I.

    Amanda, now Manda
    believes she’s nothing more
    than pointless misery

    who took the sorry shape
    of woman turned mistake.
Her head is bowed to hide

    the beauty of a face
    that faced a thousand lies,
    deceit implied. She walks

    receiving curious looks
    in women’s restrooms, eyes
    are squinted, scoffs deride.

    II.

    Her eyes are blank.
    She weeps again,
    her mind ashamed.

    III.

One day the world had turned
    on her, as quickly as
her bones had snapped. The glow

    of stars she hardly missed,
for all that crossed her mind
    was losing sleep: escape,

    demise. Her heart protests:
let’s give the world a taste
    of fighting, shouted her

    aortic pump. If x
    is equal to enough,
    where does the problem lie?

    IV.

    Her fists are clenched.
    She cries in pride,
    her heart aflame.
