Two of the world’s most iconic football superstars will show off their talent next month in the country’s biggest all star football game.
Chelsea F.C. legend, Dennis Wise, and Fabio Cannavaro, a member of the Italian team that won the 2006 FIFA World Cup, will be joining the team of either Phil or James Younghusband, in the second Clear Dream Match on August 24. The final venue has yet to be announced.
Wise and Cannavaro will also be holding special clinics to teach and encourage more Filipinos to play the sport.
“We wanted to shake things up this year by bringing in the two football legends to compete with our country’s best,” Clear Philippines Brand Manager Drew Copuyoc said at a press conference Wednesday in Taguig City.
Copuyoc adds that they initially consulted with Phil and James on how to make Clear Dream Match 2 even more exciting; “We asked them if they wanted us to invite coaches or players, and both of them wanted to play with the players they had idolized.”
Both seasoned professionals, Wise and Cannavaro have garnered several individual and team accolades in their time.
Wise is one of the most successful players to captain Chelsea. During his time at Stamford Bridge, Wise won two FA Cups, a League Cup and a UEFA Cup Winners’ cup.
The addition of Wise to the Clear Dream Match is actually a dream of sorts for James and Phil.
“When we were still training with Chelsea, we used to watch Wise play all the time. He is like a legend to us,” James said.
Before they became local superstars, the Younghusbands once played as reserve players for Chelsea, the same team where Wise made a name for himself in the 90’s.
“I look forward to getting there [in the Philippines]and play with the football stars of your country,” the 46-year-old Wise said in a video clip.
Cannavaro led Italy to the World Cup victory in 2006 and bagged the FIFA World Player of the Year award in the same year. The former Real Madrid star also has two La Liga titles under his belt.
“During the FIFA World Cup, I was watching on TV and cheering with the rest of the world as Cannavaro led Italy to the championship,” Phil added.
Besides Cannavaro and Wise, the Younghusbands will be choosing from a 50-man pool comprised of local stars like Chieffy Caligdong, Anton del Rosario, Simon and Chris Greatwich, as well as celebrities such as Daniel Matsunaga, DJs Slick Rick, Tony Toni, and Sam YG among others.
Following last year’s 5-1 defeat to younger brother Phil, James vows to even the score, while Phil fights to maintain his reign as Clear Dream Match champion.
This year, Clear Philippines will donate a percentage of ticket sales to the Tuloy sa Don Bosco Foundation – the organization known for sending a Football team to the Homeless World Cup, as well as Unilever Personal Care products for all children in the foundation.
Another significant addition to this year’s Clear Dream Match is getting the fans more involved in the selection process. “The first draft pick will be dependent on the team with the most fan interactions on Facebook,” Copuyoc said.
Voting began on July 10 via CLEAR’s Facebook site at Facebook.com/ClearPH. On August 10, the top 30 players will be drafted by James and Phil for the Clear Dream Match 2013 scheduled on August 24. The final venue has yet to be announced.
”From the onset fans will get to join the rivalry by going to Facebook.com/ClearPH or by downloading the Clear Stadium app on the Play Store or the App Store. They can vote for their favorite football players, play interactive games and share their support for their favorite team to get more points.
The most digitally active fan of the winning team will also join the Younghusbands for a trip to Brazil in 2014.
