• Forest fire hits mining firms, police patrol base in Surigao del Norte


    A day-long forest fire burn down a mining firm and a police patrol base in a remote village early on Friday in Claver town, Surigao del Norte province, police reports said on Saturday.

    Reports reaching Camp Crame said hit by the forest fire was the compound of Platinum Group Metals Corp, in Barangay Cagdianaoof the said town.

    The reports said that the fire, of still unknown origin, started at about 11 a.m. inside the mining firm’s compound and spread-out and burned the two buildings of Shenzou Mining Corp., (SMC).

    The fire then engulfed the whole area of Km. 90 and the patrol base of 132nd Regional Public Safety Company (RPSC), the reports said.

    The reports added that the fire at the patrol base burned one generator set, one M16 rifle, one shotgun, various ammunition and personal belongings of the base personnel.

    Firefighters and policemen quickly responded to the said incident and the fire Marshal declared a fire out at about 4 a.m. on Friday, reports said.

    No casualties were reported and the estimated cost of damage is still being determine, reports said. ANTHONY VARGAS
