Former Abra governor found guilty of murder

FORMER Abra Gov. Vicente Valera was found guilty for the killing of former Abra Rep. Luis Bersamin Jr. in 2006.

Public Attorney’s Office (PAO) chief Persida Rueda-Acosta said the promulgation of the case was conducted on Wednesday at the sala of Judge Roslyn Tria of the Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 94.

The lawyers of PAO, as legal counsels of the state witnesses in the case, were among those who attended the promulgation.

Valera and his co-accused Rufino Panday and Leo Bello were sentenced with the penalty of reclusion perpetua or life imprisonment for two counts of murder in connection with the killing of Bersamin and his police escort, SPO1 Adolfo Ortega.

Also, for the case of frustrated murder for the injuries sustained by the driver of Bersamin, Allan Sawadan, all three accused were sentenced to imprisonment of up to 12 years.

It can be recalled that Bersamin was shot to death in front of the Mount Carmel Church, in New Manila, Quezon City on Dec. 16, 2006. Bersamin is the brother of Supreme Court Associate Justice Lucas Bersamin.
