BAMBANG, Nueva Vizcaya: After more than two decades of political domination by the businessmen Tings, the city of Tuguegarao has a new mayor in former police Gen. Jefferson Soriano.
Running under the Nationalist People’s Alliance, Soriano won by a small margin of 1,132 over reelectionist Mayor Delfin Ting for the city’s mayoral post.
A member of the Magilas Class of 1976 of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA), where former Philippine National Police Officer chief Director Gen. Jesus Versoza also belongs, Soriano also served as police regional director of Cagayan Valley.
A former deputy director general of the PNP, Soriano is a holder of a United Nations-sponsored Doctorate Degree in Peace and Security Administration.
“This is the first ever hotly contested race in the history of Tuguegarao,” said Benjie de Yro of the regional office of the Philippine Information Agency in the city.
It was in 1998 when a Filipino-Chinese family led by the family’s patriarch Delfin Ting defeated incumbent Florentino Fermin and held Tuguegarao’s top post for 25 years.
