Foton Tornadoes will play in front of a home crowd when they host the 2016 Asian Volleyball Confederation’s Asian Women’s Club Championship slated on September 3 to 11 at the Alonte Sports Center in Biñan City, Laguna.
The Tornadoes will carry the name Foton Pilipinas when it represents the Philippines in the tournament.
The 18-woman pool preparing for the meet is composed of Tornadoes Angeli Pauline Araneta, Jaja Santiago, Patty Orendain, Ivy Perez, Bia General, Rhea Dimaculangan, Maika Ortiz, Kara Acevedo, Ej Laure, Cherry Ann Rondina, and Carol Ann Cerveza.
The Foton players will be reinforced by F2 Logistics’ Aby Maraño, Petron libero Jen Reyes and RC Cola-Army’s Cristina Salak, Jovelyn Gonzaga and Rachel Anne Daquis. Two imports will also join the squad namely Philippine Superliga Grand Prix MVP Lindsay Stalzer and Ariel Usher.
Usher and Stalzer led the Foton team to victory over Petron in the PSL Grand Prix Conference finals last year.
“We are excited and honored to represent the country. This is a big responsibility and we are accepting the challenges,” said Foton team manager Alvin Lu on Friday during a news conference at the Crimson Hotel.
Lu said Stalzer will arrive in the country on August 13 and Usher on August 16 to join the local players for a two-week training. He said that the initial objective of Foton Pilipinas is to land in the Top 5.
From the 18-woman pool, 16 players will be chosen to see action in the meet by August 17.
Foton Pilipinas will play in Group A along with Hong Kong and Vietnam while North Korea, Iran and Thailand will play in Group B.
Seeing action in Group C are Japan, Indonesia and Kazakhstan while Taipei, Malaysia, China and Turkmenistan will compose Group D.
