Four Filipino players led by veteran campaigners Efren “Bata” Reyes and Francisco “Django” Bustamante reached the fourth round of the 2014 US Open 9-Ball Championship on Thursday at the Norfolk Marriott Chesapeake in Virginia, US.
Reyes, the 1999 World 9-Ball titlist, outclassed Radoslaw Babica of Poland, 11-3, while Bustamante stamped his class over John Morra of Canada via 11-6 victory.
Also advancing to the next round are Dennis Orcollo and Warren Kiamco.
Orcollo subdued former world champion Daryl Peach of Great Britain, 11-7, then Kiamco nipped American Jonathan Pinegar, 11-8, in the tournament that employs a double-elimination format.
Reyes and Orcollo, however, will be facing each other for a spot in the fifth round while Bustamante tackles Philippine Open titlist Thorsten Hohmann of Germany, who survived Li He Wen of China, 11-10.
For his part, Kiamco battles Nick van den Berg of the Netherlands, an 11-1 winner over Mika Immonen of Finland.
Unheralded Rodrigo Geronimo, on the other hand, was relegated to the losers’ bracket following his 9-11 defeat to Ernesto Dominguez of Mexico.
Geronimo must win all his next matches to stay in contention.
Meanwhile, Rubilen Amit posted her first win in the 2014 Women’s World 9-Ball Championships being held in Guilin, China. Amit blasted Indian Suniti Damani, 7-2, for a 1-0 card in Group E.
Promising cue master Cheska Centeno holds a 1-1 record in Group A. She lost to Yang Fan of China, 6-7, but bounced back with a 7-4 win over Katarzyna Wesolowska of Poland.
Iris Ranola was booted out in the tournament after absorbing a 0-7 loss to Chen Siming of China and 6-7 decision to Ina Kaplan of Germany in Group D.
