I have been a witness to several anniversary parties but this anniversary party beats all that I have been to. The venue was at an iconic lobby and the party was reminiscent of royal balls of long ago where guests came in their grandest frocks.
The party I am referring to was The Peninsula Manila’s commemoration of four legendary decades in the Philippines. The hospitality icon threw one of the grandest gala events this city had seen in a very long time. As such, Manila’s high society and loyal clients of the hotel didn’t dare miss it.
The hotel celebrated its 40th anniversary with a gorgeous gala party on September 14. Shimmering custom-made capiz chandeliers cascaded down The Lobby ceiling; entertainment was top billed by Lea Salonga (with a touch of nostalgia provided by the original Las Guitaras guitar troupep—the same group who performed in The Lobby every night in the early years of the hotel); buffet tables overflowed with the finest French cheeses, Philippine artisanal chocolates, lobster and caviar, Cebu lechon and Atlantic turbot, among other sumptuous meals; wine and champagne flowed non-stop whilst the party extended all the way to the hotel’s Salon de Ning, Spices and The Pool.
Chairman of The Hong Kong and Shanghai Hotels, Limited (holding company of The Peninsula Hotels), the Hon. Sir Michael Kadoorie flew in from his city to grace the evening’s festivities.
In a heartfelt speech that traced the history of The Peninsula Manila, Kadoorie said, “This hotel is very close to my heart being only the second Hong Kong and Shanghai Hotels property to bear the Peninsula name. Following our flagship property The Peninsula Hong Kong, which opened in 1928. We were thrilled to open a new Peninsula Hotel in the Philippines, which is famous for its warm people and spectacular scenery.”
The Peninsula Manila General Manager Mark Choon also gave a speech, saying, “Tonight, we look forward to sharing our ‘Peninsula’ memories, as well as creating new ones with all of you.”
The Peninsula Manila’s 40th anniversary party will live long in the memory of all who attended. Hoping for more anniversaries like this!
