Four Pinoy pugs enter ASBC meet quarterfinals


Four young Filipino boxers made it to the quarterfinals after scoring impressive wins on Wednesday in the 2016 ASBC Asian Confederation Youth Boxing Championships being held in Pavlodar, Kazakhstan.

Carlo Paalam led the onslaught of the Philippine team as he scored a second-round technical knockout win over Tuan Mohamed Zulkifli of Malaysia in the light flyweight class (49 kgs.).

Also scoring victories were ASBC Asian Confederation Junior Boxing Championships bronze medallist Ronald Chavez Jr. (lightweight event 60 kgs.), Mario Jaga (bantamweight 56 kgs.) and Ranjo Gil Napoles (light welterweight 64 kgs.).

Chavez notched a unanimous decision win (30-26, 30-25, 30-26) against Rasit Mohammad of Malaysia while Jaga posted the same 3-0 win (30-26, 30-27, 30-27) against another Malaysian bet Muhammad Saiful Idham Azuan.

Napoles joined them in celebration with a 3-0 victory (30-27, 30-27, 30-26) over Kumar Dhinesh of Singapore.

Paalam will have his hands full in the next round when he takes on Chinese Chen Zexin, a second-round technical knockout winner over Tenzin Drugyel of Bhutan while Jaga will be fighting M. Mamatalin of Kyrgyzstan – also a technical knockout winner over Thinley Ugyen of Bhutan.

Chavez has ASBC Asian Junior Champion Bilolbek Mirzarakhimov of Uzbekistan as his next foe while Napoles meets Haidar Ammar of Syria.
