If Sen. Grace Poe will run for the presidency in 2016, an upcoming teleserye may just help her land the votes of policemen.

On Monday, the senator’s mother Susan Roces, the widow of Fernando Poe Jr. (FPJ), graced the launch of a new teleserye based on the FPJ obra, Ang Probinsyano.

The 1997 film starred FPJ in a dual role, first as a policeman named Ador who is killed in a drug bust operation after he was betrayed by a fellow policeman. He reemerges as Ador’s twin Kardo, a provincial policeman, when the former’s superiors device a plan for the latter to assume his brother’s identity to bait and capture members of the drug syndicate, as well as the corrupt policemen responsible for the crime. According to Dreamscape, the creative arm of ABS-CBN, the inspiration to adapt Ang Probinsyano for television took root from the nation’s need and sentiment to honor the 44 Special Action Force (SAF) commandos slain in Mamasapano, Maguindanao in January and from the Filipino people’s realization that despite the unending issues of corruption in government, there still remain men and women in uniform who will fight selflessly for country and for peace.

Roces, who spoke on behalf of FPJ Productions for this joint venture for television, thanked ABS-CBN for paying tribute to her husband.

“Maraming ginawang pelikulang si FPJ tungkol sa kapulisan. Malapit kayo sa puso ni FPJ,” she declared, turning to a handful of police officers who attended the event.

“Bagama’t sila ay yumao na, naniniwala ako na they try to reach out to us [for a message]….

FPJ died from a stroke in December 2004, seventh months after his failed bid for the presidency.

Roces called for the resignation of former President Gloria Arroyo in 2005.  Her famous speech, “You stole the presidency, not once but twice!” came on the heels of the “Hello Garci” scandal, where a wiretapped conversation between Arroyo and former Comelec Commissioner Virgilio Garcillano was leaked, discussing vote padding in her favor in Mindanao.

She gave her blessings to their only child, Grace Poe, to run for senator in 2013.  Poe topped the senatorial race.

She is currently being wooed by political groups to run for next year’s presidential elections, and if she does, it is certain that her mother will be her biggest asset in the ensuing campaign.

Set to reprise the role of FPJ as Ador/Kardo the TV adaptation of Ang Probinsyano is multi-awarded actor Coco Martin, with a powerful supporting cast in Albert Martinez, Agot Isidro, Jaime Fabregas, Angeline Quinto, Arjo Atayde, and Bela Padilla, under the direction of Malu Sevilla and Avel Sunpongco.

The teleserye’s airing date is yet to be announced.
