‘Fight of the Century’ souvenirs are a hit!
BE it in the crowded streets of Divisoria and Quiapo to the gaming hub of Las Vegas, fans are going crazy over souvenirs for the “Fight of the Century.”
In the final countdown to the mega bout of Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr., www.fox5vegas reported that a “May-Pac pop up shop” has opened its doors in downtown Las Vegas.
“Inside the shop, located on Las Vegas Boulevard and Fremont Street, you’ll find everything from officially licensed T-shirts to a fight simulation video game,” said the report. “You’ll also find hats, gloves, jackets and posters. The stuff isn’t cheap. Some T-shirts go for $55. We found a jacket for $400 and posters for $20. The most expensive item is a painting that goes for $5,000.”
With ringside tickets to the much-awaited battle of champions fetching $180,000 (that’s P8 million), it no longer comes as a surprise that even their souvenirs fetch such big bucks.
Here at home, the People’s Champ’s Team Pacquaio store reports that sales have tripled over the last couple of weeks from autographed caps to boxing gloves. Again, these are sold in the thousands of pesos, and yet are selling like hotcakes.
“I still have to buy a ticket to watch the fight in a cinema,” said one fan whom The Sunday Times Magazine caught shopping at the Robinson Galleria Team Pacquiao branch in Quezon City. “But I’m still buying these because this is one fight I’m sure I’ll never forget.”
But as always in the Philippines, everyday folks also find a way to cash in on such a mamoth event. And they cater to an everyday market just as themselves. Mountains of T-shirts are selling fast in Divisoria and Quaipo for the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight, and thankfully, these sell for just P200 a pop.
In other words, you needn’t be surprised if fans turn out truly “dressed for the occasion” at viewing spots across the metro today. And maybe, you still have time to get yours.
