Almost a year after they first worked together in ABS-CBN’s prime time drama Two Wives—and six months since they confirmed they had gotten together—Daniel Matsunaga and Erich Gonzales are back in the teleserye scene with the network’s first new offering for 2016.
Looking every bit in love, the Brazilian-Japanese model-turned-actor and drama princess excitedly appeared at the official launch of their show, Be My Lady, on January 11 and talked about the very appropriate theme of the series: A light romantic comedy shedding light on interracial relationships.
Premiering on Monday, January 18, Be My Lady follows the story of certified “dalagang Pilipina” Pinang and modern Brazilian-Japanese guy Phil, who find their way into each other’s hearts despite differences in language, beliefs and culture.
Pinang grew up in a simple family with big dreams. To make ends meet, her mother Marcy (Janice De Belen) works in Singapore in hopes of earning money to reclaim a piece of land her husband Emil (Al Tantay) used to own for farming. Luck, however, fails to go her way as an unfortunate incident gets her deported.
Phil, meanwhile, grew up in a very western and liberated environment. He is independent and lives a very comfortable life with his mother Chelsea (Priscilla Mereilles) in Singapore. A wedding of a dear friend suddenly brings him to the Philippines, which also gives him the long awaited chance of finding his childhood nanny (De Belen) with whom he wants to make amends.
As he searches for the person very dear to him, Phil also meets the woman who makes his heart race like no other. Thus begins the challenge of making her fall in love.
According to both Erich and Daniel, working together anew has made them even closer.
“Mas napapatunayan ko talaga na Daniel, he is worth everything; he’s the best thing that ever happened to me. I have no regrets, masaya [ako]. Thank you, Lord. I just thank God for him, for his life—everything,” said the pretty actress.
Daniel for his part said that while he hasn’t proposed to Erich yet, their interracial relationship in real life is headed for the altar: “Oo naman, siyempre, mahal na mahal ko siya, but let’s wait for the right time [for marriage]. God has really his own time.”
Completing the cast of Be My Lady are Yayo Aguila, Almira Muhlach, Yves Flores, Karen Dematera, MJ Cayabyab, RK Bagatsing, Devon Seron, Karen Reyes, Mike Lloren, Ana Abad Santos, Perry Escano, Marife Necesito, and comedy trio No Direction.
The show is directed by Theodore Boborol.
