THE Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Friday said it will not allow slow-moving funeral corteges or processions on major thoroughfares. The new rule was part of an initiative of the Inter-Agency Council on Traffic (I-Act) to ease troubled traffic conditions in Metro Manila, especially on busy streets. MMDA General Manager Thomas Orbos said this was the consensus during a consultation with the funeral services industry on the use of major roads in Metro Manila on Thursday. The funeral transport service providers also approved I-Act’s recommendations that the funeral convoys shall proceed at normal traffic speed observing traffic rules and signals and without special treatment. For those requiring walks, as per tradition and culture, designated walk areas will be identified based on assessment of funeral parlors. Orbos said the agreements will be enforced until the end of 2016 and will be reassessed, finetuned and recalibrated.
