With famed comediennes replete in ABS-CBN—from Pokwang to Melai Cantiveros, and even the likes of sisters Toni and Cathy Gonzaga—top network executive Linggit Tan zeroed in on the network’s need for a new breed of male comics. That was the impetus of what became the highly successful search of the “Funny One,” a segment within the daily afternoon program It’s Showtime, which may just have discovered TV’s new breed of comedians.

On August 12, ABS-CBN presented the winners of the contest at a press conference, which thankfully drew a generally positive reaction from the audience, ranging from giggles to flat out guffaws throughout the series of skits.

Led by grand winner Ryan Rems Satira—who won P1 million as grand champion of Funny One”—Crazy Duo (1st runner-up), Nonong Ballinan (2nd runner-up), No Direction (3rd runner-up), and Gibis Alejandrino (4th runner-up), also showed comedy in bringing on the laughs. Ranging from traditional slapstick to more thought-out banter, the competition winners showed promise that ABS-CBN may just be able to groom their own Michael V. (GMA Network) or Ogie Alcasid (TV5) from the group.

“Some of them since winning have already appeared in several shows in the network, and the others have also been assigned to new projects including giving comic relief in our teleseryes,” continued Tan. “We feel confident we’ve landed the very guys we’re looking for with this group. So watch out!”
