IN a highly competitive industry, the broadcast and journalism profession demands skills, passion, and determination among aspiring graduates who wish to work in different broadcast networks and publishing companies in the country.
To encourage such students who exemplified excellence during their training and education in their broadcast-related courses, GMA Network honored them with its annual Excellence Award.
This year, the award was given to outstanding students from the network’s partner universities and institutions, namely the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Cebu, and Mindanao, Don Bosco Technical College in Mandaluyong, and Angeles University Foundation in Pampanga.
As part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) program, GMA Network promotes the value of excellence among the external community by honoring outstanding graduates from these selected universities who have demonstrated exemplary leadership, technical skill and academic performance.
The network’s assistant vice president for Corporate Affairs Ma. Teresa Pacis said that this program aims to encourage students to become the best version of themselves.
“Passion for excellence is a virtue possessed by most of our employees and this contributes to the Network’s continued success. Through the GMA Network Excellence Award, we hope to encourage students to be the best that they can be,” the vice president said.
“We hope that they will make excellence a habit especially now that they are set to become media practitioners,” she added.
Since 2001, a total of 46 outstanding students have been cited with the GMA Network Excellence Award. In 2012, the Award was extended to include an awardee from among the finalists of the Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines, a formation program spearheaded by RFM Foundation that pays tribute to exemplary college students who actively take part in nation-building initiatives.
This year, eight outstanding students are added to the roster of GMA Network Excellence awardees, including: Aldrin Jose (Electronics Communication Engineering, Don Bosco), Ma. Angela Teresa Sebastian (Communication Research, UP Diliman), Iza Darlene Santok Cay (Journalism, UP Diliman), Isabel Patricia Soresca (Broadcast Communication, UP Diliman), Mary Heliane Fabian (AB Communication, Angeles University Foundation), Fila Guia Hidalgo (Communication Arts major in Media Arts, UP Mindanao), Rejzl Anne A. Awit (AB Communication, UP Cebu), and TOSP–NCR finalist Jose Lemuel Silvestre (AB Mass Communication, Far Eastern University).
Among the judges in this year’s GMA Network Excellence Award were GMA Senior Program Manager for Public Affairs JM Cobarrubias, GMA Senior Program Manager for Entertainment Ruth Mariñas, and Kapuso Primetime King Dingdong Dantes. The panel of judges evaluated the awardees based on standards reflected in the student’s performance.
The awardees received a GMA Excellence Award plaque and P10,000 cash prize. Some of the previous awardees and finalists are now working in the Network in various capacities, including news reporters Dano Tingcungco, Jam Sisante and Micaela Papa.
To culminate the annual Excellence Award, all awardees and finalists were gathered in an event called Values Formation Day, which aims to further contextualize the value of excellence in the realm of GMA as a media entity.
Through talks and speeches of executives and other personalities, the network’s advocacy for excellence is shared among the young audience. This year’s speakers were veteran broadcaster and GMA Network Consultant for Radio Operations Mike C. Enriquez and GMA News reporter, anchor and TV host Ivan Mayrina.
