• FVR accepts offer to head China talks

    16

Former President Fidel V. Ramos has accepted the offer of President Rodrigo Duterte to head the team that will open bilateral talks with China following the decision of an international tribunal invalidating Beijing’s claim on the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea).

Ramos accepted the offer when he met with Duterte at the Marco Polo Hotel in Davao City Saturday night.

The meeting took place a few days after Duterte named Ramos as the Philippines’ special envoy to China, explaining his post-arbitration predicament that “war is not an option,” and peaceful talks are the way to go.

However, it was not known when the talks will start since the Philippine government had rejected China’s condition that the tribunal’s ruling will not be discussed in the bilateral talks.

In his speech in Maguindanao on Friday, the President said he is considering following Ramos’ suggestion to set aside the court’s ruling when the Philippines talks to China.

“Ramos said that it’s all right if we take out the arbitral judgment from the talks,” Duterte said. “If it’s really the will of the people, especially Congress, maybe this will lead to progress.”

“If we can just have a settlement with them despite the arbitral judgment, I think that we can get many benefits,” he added.

Duterte was referring to possible investments from China that may flow to his home island of Mindanao if Ramos succeeds in repairing the strained ties between the two countries.

“It’s China that has money, not America. America doesn’t have money. So, I really pray that we are able to settle our fundamental [problem], the China Sea,” the President added
The arbitral tribunal had ruled that China has no historic rights over the South China Sea and that it violated the rights of the Philippines with its actions in the disputed waters.

But China rejected the ruling and said that it will push on with its construction works in disputed waters.

We cannot and should not left the aribitrral ruling in the Hague just for the sake of investment. China is not the only investor in our country. We have Japan which is richer than China, we have Australia and all the other western countries why be beholden to China. The Philippines is a growing economy among all asian countries and I’m sure investors will come to invest in the Philippines not only China. Lets stand on principle otherwise we will become the laughing stock of he world

in fact business climate in China is cooling down and soon their business will crumble if they will continue to defy the world

    2. president has made an excellent choice sending ex president Ramos to talk with China. one has to adapt to situation in order to survive. China is our only hope, and it does not interfere with our internal affair, not like America or Japan. besides, the so called tribunal is nothing but a farce created by influence of American, it has formally deny by United Nation that it has no connection with this world organization, it is only a private consultation (court) being paid to give consultation. that is why we have paid more than 3000 million dollar for the service performed to secure to piece of useless paper.

    3. PH has the upper hand on its dispute with China in West Philippines Sea or South China Sea with the PCA ruling against China that there is no historical basis for it’s nine-dash lines of South China Sea. Even ordinary Chinese believes that CPP leadership idea of claiming islands 1000 kms from their shore is unfair to PH.

    4. I really don’t know what kind of negotiation or agreement will arise from this one without considering the arbitration decision. We have two ducks quacking here, US says “no negotiation”, CHINA says “yes to negotiation but no to arbitration”. I hope we are choosing wisely which side to go else it may be too late to realize the mistakes we have made… Even our president is a bit confuse here, when he met with the US officers last week he said, “PHL will not make any compromise regarding the arbitration with CHINA”, now he’s saying “America has no money”… hope we’re heading on the right direction….

    5. He sold Ft. Bonifacio, couldn’t account for the proceeds of the sale!
He brought us the world’s most expensive electricity!
Instead of doing his homework, went on a world tour!

    6. If we agree to set aside the arbitral judgment and talk to China for the sake of getting benefits (monetary or whatever) for me it will just confirm that Filipinos can be bought. We are like prostitutes.

    7. Hwag natin kalimutan Na during his term as president of our Republic nakuha ng China ang atin Mischief Reef at wala syang ginawa. Tapos ngayon sya ang padadalhan Sa China? Why not former DFA Sec Del Rosario and SCJA Carpio at more patriotic ang mga yan. Look Sa pag benta Nya ng Fort Bonifacio walang nangyaring AFP Modernization Sa time Nya. It’s a big mistake to let FVR do the talking at Baka Ibebenta tayo nyan.

      • DU30 really needs to evaluate a person’s competence in negotiation. To be honest I don’t think FVR is the right person for PH government to negotiate South China Sea. First of all he is old and have a poor memory, poor communication skill, lack knowledge of China’s International politics, second, he is ex-military and China is aware that he and her sister Leticia are close to the Americans, thirdly, he does not have a good track record of negotiating with other foreign leaders.
His first suggestion of setting aside arbitration ruling is the first mistake and there will be hundreds more. FVR’s suggestion does not consider the position of strength and China will explore this weaknesses.

    8. This is like selling our soul to China by not taking up the UN Court decision favoring the Philippines. Let China go to hell with its money.

We do not need the money from China. We have been growing economically without their money. I disagree with Duterte’s stand not to bring up the court ruling in discussions with China. The international community of nations is on our side. Let us insist on our rights. We really look like beggars if we do what Duterte wants.

    9. Going to China to negotiate what. This just tell the whole world that we are lameduck.
We can’t go after a bully.

    10. Thank you very much Mr. President Ramos you are not only patriot but a truly great soldier that follow the command of his commander in chief. Being an envoy not only that you carry the name of our republic but also the future of the next generation who will then sowed the fruit of your sacrifice. Hail to you Mr. President Ramos your commitment to your country even to the last strenght you still standing protecting the country that you love. May our fellow Filipinos see you as a beacon that will lead our nation to properity and once again bring back our trust and pride as a Filipino. More power to you Sir and may the Almighty always shine and guide you during this challenging task.

      • Time ni FVR nakuha ng China ang atin Mischief Reef at wala syang ginawa! Mas patriotic pa sina former DFA Sec Del Rosario and SCJA Carpio at simula pa lamang pinagtatanggol Na Nila ang Sa atin. Me narinig ka ba Kay FVR defending yung issue Laban Sa China? Wala di ba! Look Sa pag benta Nya ng Fort Bonifacio ni walang AFP modernization nangyari! Nasaan ang Pera ng AFP Modernization? Kaya naloloko na ang AFP at walang Fighter Jets pang external defense.

      • No need thank this person nothing change when he was the president, actually all of them (presidents) lived in comfort when they are the ones sitted… Poor juan
