Singapore Southeast Asian Games champion Josie Gabuco advanced to the quarterfinals of the light flyweight class (45-48 kgs.) in the 2016 AIBA World Women’s Boxing Championship being held at the Barys Arena in Astana, Kazakhstan.
Gabuco scored a clean 3-0 unanimous win over Volha Lushchyk of Belarus in the second round of the tournament sanctioned by the international Boxing Association.
The former world champion Gabuco arranged a quarterfinal meeting with Chinese Wang Yuyan, a 2-0 unanimous decision winner over Valeria Calabrese of Italy.
Gabuco stunned fourth seed Sevda Asenova of Bulgaria via a 2-0 unanimous win in the first round of the event participated in by more than 200 boxers from some 50 countries.
Earlier, AIBA World Women’s Boxing Championship silver medalist Nesthy Petecio (flyweight category 51 kgs.) and Singapore Southeast Asian Games silver medalist Irish Magno (bantamweight division 54 kgs.) lost in their respective divisions.
