Josie Gabuco dominated her Indonesian foe Saturday to grab a gold medal, the first in boxing for the Philippines in the 27th Southeast Asian Games in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar.
Gabuco defeated Beatrix Seguro via majority decision in the light flyweight female class, with scores of 40-36, 40-36 and 38-38.
Five Filipino boxers were also fighting as of Saturday night for gold medals in their weight classes.
Gabuco, also a world champion, won the gold in the pinweight class during the 2011 SEA Games in Indonesia.
Another Filipina, Nesthy Petecio, settled for a silver medal, losing to New Ni of Myanmar in the female bantamweight category, 39-37, 39-37, 38-38.
The Philippines has four golds, six silvers and 10 bronze in the Myanmar Games as of late Saturday afternoon.
Myanmar leads the medal tally with 28 golds, 26 silvers and 22 bronzes.
At the Zaya Thiri Indoor Stadium, the Philippine men’s basketball team won its fifth straight game as it routed Indonesia, 83-52.
Naturalized Marcus Douthit posted 11 points while Ateneo’s Kiefer Ravena scored 10 and Mark Belo and Kevin Ferrer added nine points each for the Filipinos.
The Filipinos face the Malaysians on Sunday.
The women’s squad goes up against Indonesia on Sunday at 10 a.m. (11:30 a.m. in Manila) gunning for a second win in three games.
