Seasoned cue master Ramil Gallego copped the runner-up honors in the 2017 Pac-West Invitational Championship held at the Sam’s Hollywood Billiards in Portland, Oregon in US.
Gallego surrendered an 8-9 close decision to American Shane Van Boening in the championship round of the 10-ball tournament.
Van Boening took home the $6,000 top purse while Gallego settled for the $4,000 runner-up prize.
Gallego reached the final round after surviving in the grueling losers’ bracket.
The tournament employed a double-elimination event.
The Filipino player opened his bid with a 9-1 win over Peter Gates in the opening round and Charles Gibbons in the second round (9-1).
But Gallego suffered a 4-9 loss to American Skyler Woodward in the third round that sent him to the one-loss side.
Gallego then posted victories over Sanderson Zack (9-1), Ron Camantique (9-5), Scott Pahl (9-1), Dennis Hatch (9-6) and compatriot Antonio Lining (9-5).
He also ousted American Oscar Dominguez (9-3) and Mexican Ernesto Dominguez (9-2) to arrange a championship showdown with Van Boening.
For his part, Van Boening was undefeated in the tournament after beating Don Lash (9-0), Hunter Lombardo (9-3), Camantique (9-4), Woodward (9-7), Lining (9-6) and Ernesto (9-4).
Lining still went home with $1,300 consolation.
It was Gallego’s second podium finish this year after finishing third in the Inaugural Scotty Townsend Memorial Open 9-Ball Championship dominated by former world champion Dennis Orcollo in March.
Meanwhile, World Pool-Billiard Association President Ian Anderson announced that the 2017 World 9-Ball Championship scheduled in December would push through in Doha, Qatar.
The Philippines will be sending a strong contingent to the world meet that includes Orcollo, Lee Vann Corteza, Carlo Biado and Johann Chua.
