Game 1 of UAAP softball finals unfolds today

Defending champion Adamson University battles University of the Philippines (UP) in Game 1 of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 77 softball finals today at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium in Manila.

The series opener is at 9 a.m. with the Lady Falcons holding a thrice-to-beat advantage for sweeping the elimination round. They only need to win twice to get their 14th title overall.

But the Lady Maroons are out to give the Lady Falcons a run for the money.

“We are prepared to beat Adamson. If Adamson wins, we give it to them, but we will do our darnedest best to win,” said UP head coach Kiko Diaz.

UP advanced to the finals by ousting University of Santo Tomas, 9-1, in their do-or-die semifinal game on Sunday.

The Lady Maroons last won a softball crown in 2008 while the Lady Falcons ruled nine of the last 12 season – 2003 to 2006 and 2010 to 2014.

Adamson mentor Ana Santiago, who also trains the multi-titled Blu Girls, wants to continue the dynasty. “We’ll just go out and play. We’re motivated to retain our title,” she said.

The Game 2 of the series is scheduled on Thursday at 9 a.m. at the same venue.
