Young singer Garie Concepcion will soon make her professional musical theatre debut in Atlantis Productions’ staging of the legendary musical Carrie which runs from September 20 until October 6, 2013 at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, RCBC Plaza, Makati.
Garie had wanted to pursue singing ever since she can remember. She grew up listening to Disney songs and remembers herself singing into a hairbrush pretending to be the Little Mermaid, or spreading out a blanket and pretending it was a magic carpet as she sang A Whole New World when she was just 3-years-old. In 2011, she launched her debut album entitled Relaks Lang Tayo under Star Records.
Now Garie takes on the demands of the professional musical theatre world as she soon begins rehearsals for the upcoming musical Carrie, in which she plays Helen, an immature high school student with a great need to belong who is also one of the students who bullies Carrie. She joins Menchu Lauchengo-Yulo, Markki Stroem, Yanah Laurel, Shiela Valderrama-Martinez, and Mikkie Bradshaw.
Carrie, based on the modern classic by Stephen King, with music by Academy Award Winner Michael Gore, Lyrics by Academy Award winner Dean Pitchford and a Book by Lawrence D. Cohen (who wrote the screenplay of the Brian de Palma film), tells the tragic story of a misunderstood high school teenager named Carrie White with extraordinary telekinetic powers. Terrorized by her oppressive religious fanatic mother and bullied by her classmates, Carrie’s violent rampage of revenge remains one of the most terrifying stories of all time. It will be directed by Bobby Garcia.
Carrie first premiered on Broadway 25 years ago and, after numerous revisions, was recently revived at the MCC Theatre Off-Broadway.
Garie says of her musical theatre debut, “I’m very excited and nervous at the same time. I still can’t believe it. This is the second time I auditioned for Atlantis. I have always dreamed of being in a musical ever since I was a little girl, so I am thankful to everyone at Atlantis especially Tito Bobby (Garcia) for giving me this amazing opportunity. I’m nervous because this the first time for me to do a musical so I know I have a lot to learn and I have many new things to discover.”
While Garie continues her recording career, she is thrilled that her dream of appearing on stage is finally coming true. She says, “This is a dream come true for me. And I hope to be given the chance to explore more roles on stage after this. I have so much to learn about theatre and the craft of singing, acting and dancing all at the same time. I am passionate about it and I will do the best I can to always do better every time.”
