CEBU CITY: Former Cebuano reality boxing show star Roli Gasca gets another crack at the world title, this time against fearsome African Lusanda Komanisi for the International Boxing Organization (IBO) world featherweight (126 pounds) crown in Eastern Cape, South AFrica on December 15.
Gasca, 25, a two-time IBO super bantamweight (122 pounds) title challenger, got his break in ABS-CBN’s reality boxing show Idol: Search for the Next Pinoy Boxing Superstar, is 22-5-1 with only six KOs, while Komanisi is 17-3-0 and has an impressive 16 knockout victories.
Gasca has fought twice for the world title, losing both by unanimous decision.
In his first attempt, he fell in 12 rounds to undefeated Russian Alexander Bakhtin (29-0), 119-110, 118-111, and 118-110.
In his second attempt, he lost to the overweight Thabo Sonjica (19-2-0) also in 12 rounds.
Once a promising fighter, Gasca has lost three of his last seven fights and had one draw against Akifumi Shimoda.
And, he will have to reboot his career against an African who has stopped his last six foes.
“It will be a difficult fight for Gasca but it’s a fight that he needs to win to resurrect his career,” said ALA promotions president Michael Aldeguer.
After making his debut seven years ago, Gasca got a big break when he was included in ALA Promotions reality show Idol.
He beat Wariel Verano, Renan Branzuela and Jerome Bontog to win the super flyweight (115 pounds) in the show just months after turning 18.
Three years later, he caused a minor stir when he stopped the dangerous Tabtimdaeng Na Rachawat (34-1-0) to win the Pan Asian Boxing Association bantamweight (118 pounds) in Thailand, giving the Thai champion just his second knockout loss.
