THE Hyundai Genesis Coupe impressed the crowd at Round 3 of the Hyundai Lateral Drift Championship as a 2014 model of the sports car took in lucky guests for shotgun rides across the track. Piloting the Genesis Coupe was six-time drift racing champion Alex Perex.
Recently held at the historic Quirino Grandstand in Manila, the third round of the series saw 25 drift racers battling it out for top honors in the amateur and professional division.
Leading the amateurs were Karr Montaner of Team Drive Hard Crew, who ranked first, followed by Peter Scroth and Adrian Jonsay of Team GMW.
Among the professionals, it was 2011 Lateral Drift Champion Audel Sison of Team Autocraft who grabbed first place through an amazing display of sideways speed action. Coming in second was defending champion Gio Rodriguez, who leads this year’s tally with 234 points. Finishing in third was Perez.
Race organizer Lateral Drift Productions said that since 2005 it has been pressing for the use of established global standards for the sport, pushing drift racers to improve every year.
Serving as an added attraction during the third round of the Hyundai Lateral Drift Championship was a car display set up by the Genesis Coupe Club of the Philippines.
The race series still has three more rounds remaining, with Round 4 scheduled on September 20 at the newly built racetrack at Tarlac Recreational Park. The Hyundai Lateral Drift Championship will be the track’s inaugural event.
