ZAMBOANGA CITY: City and Public Works officials led the groundbreaking ceremony of an P11.9-million pedestrian overpass in Calumpang village, General Santos City. The 30-foot overpass will be constructed at the corner of Cahilsot Street, which is strategically positioned to allow students from nearby schools to cross the highway safely. Mayor Ronnel Rivera said residents can “now have peace of mind knowing that our children are safe while crossing the streets.” Rivera added that two more footbridges will be constructed near the Notre Dame of Dadiangas University and St. Elizabeth Hospital. The mayor added that the footbridges will help ease traffic congestion in the targeted areas. The construction, which started on Monday, will take 142 days. Pio Lumungsod, head of the local Public Works office, said the budget for the construction of the overpass comes from the Motor Vehicle User Charge which is managed by the agency’s Road Board.
