• German Red Cross project to mitigate disaster risks

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet: The German Red Cross has committed Euro 600,000 to help four provinces in the northern Philippines strengthen their disaster risk reduction (DRR) and climate change adaptation (CCA) efforts.

The fund, worth approximately P36.7 million, will support a three-year project that will benefit Benguet, Ilocos Sur, La Union and Ifugao.

The project, dubbed “PRC-GRC in partnership with the Germany Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation” will be spearheaded by the Philippine Red Cross-Benguet Chapter and will extend from 2014-2017.

In Benguet, the project will assist the municipalities of Bakun, La Trinidad and Sablan and cover 77 elementary schools and 12 secondary schools.

To formalize the project at the local level, a memorandum of agreement between the PRC, the local government unit, the Department of Education and the provincial government will be forged.

PRC Benguet administrator Oscar Paris said the project will strengthen linkages between PRC, civil society organizations, the government, the academe and technical institutions and make DRR/CCA dissemination more effective.

PRC has crafted DRR management plans incorporating basic health and hygiene promotions, first aid and road safety as well as school mobilization, a baseline survey and a hazard capacity vulnerability assessment.
