The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Zamboanga City is reminding farm owners to secure prior clearance before cutting and transporting trees. Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer (Penro) Carlito Tuballa said that such regulation helps in preventing illegal loggers from cutting and transporting trees since some of the illegal loggers claim that the trees they transport came from privately owned lands. Tuballa issued the advisory after his personnel intercepted and confiscated a truck-load of lumber in Barangay Putik last week. The lumber were seized after the driver failed to present papers except in claiming the cargo belong to a landowner who cut down the trees, had it sawn, and to be delivered to a buyer, according to Tuballa. He said undocumented lumber being transported is always presumed to have come from an illegal sources since it is easy to say the trees were cut down from a privately owned farm the reason why they adopted such regulation. He said farm owners are free to cut down their own trees but with proper documentation from the DENR.
