Gibo rejects Defense post

FORMER Tarlac Representative Gilbert “Gibo” Teodoro has turned down the offer of President Rodrigo Duterte to head the Department of National Defense (DND).

“He doesn’t want it. That means we need to look for others,” Duterte told reporters during a midnight news conference in Davao City.

The President offered the Defense portfolio to Teodoro shortly after winning the presidential elections in May. He again made the offer last week, saying that Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana may be appointed as ambassador to the United States.

But Lorenzana had told the President that he preferred to remain in the Philippines.

“He said,’ Mayor if there is no one else, if you order me to accept the position, I will. But I want you to know that I am old and life abroad is hard,” Duterte quoted Lorenzana as saying.

Duterte described Teodoro as a politician who may have been “disenchanted” in working in government.
Teodoro was Defense secretary during the Arroyo administration. He ran for president in 2010 but lost.
