Gilas favors pro, neophytes combo

After failing to reach the semis of the FIBA U-18 this month, the Samahan ng Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) will most likely recruit a mixture of newcomers and Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) stars for the next batch of Gilas Pilipinas players in preparation for the 2019 World Cup in China.

This is the gist of pronouncement made by SBP executive director Sonny Barrios and Gilas team manager Butch Antonio in Tuesday’s weekly PSA (Philippine Sports Association) Forum at Shakey’s Malate.

Barrios and Antonio said full details will be announced within three weeks, even as they confirmed SBP’s continuing program to scout for the best young cagers of the land in trying to capture a slot in the 2019 World Cup and tournaments like the September FIBA Asia Challenge, 2017 Malaysia Southeast Games, 2018 Asian Games in South Korea, and the 2019 Manila SEA Games.

Antonio said the MVP management has already started meeting on vital issues, while national coaches are again in search for new talents before a general meeting with the sport’s godfather — Manuel V. Pangilinan — takes place.

The suitable setup is to combine players from the PBA and cadets or newcomers for a bigger pool which can be flexible to a FIBA tournament schedule.

”This is because the PBA cannot keep on giving up its best players to the National Team every international competition because PBA would be disturbed in manpower and disrupted in its league tourneys,” said Barrios who is familiar with the situation—being a former PBA commissioner.

The MVP group has also initiated talks with current PBA Commissioner Chito Narvasa on how to form the best team that could be available at any given time in international jousts.

Meantime, Barrios said SBP will have its re-election of officers on Aug. 8 in its congress with 13 ‘’turn-outs” out of its total of 25 roster membership.

Those whose turn are over include MVP who will be retained and named as Chairman Emeritus, VP Ricky Vargas and Barrios. Others include the secretary, treasurer and the board members where the next chairman will come from.

”We hope that the financial support SBP will be vibrant as of today due to the generosity of MVP but we would rather see other sports receiving the same aid from sponsors,” said Barrios.
