INCHEON, South Korea: Qatar banked on its second-half surge to turn back Gilas Pilipinas, 77-68, at the start of the quarterfinal phase of the 2014 Asian Games basketball competition at the Hwaseong Sports Complex Gymnasium here.
Gilas Pilipinas must now win all its remaining games to advance to the semifinals.
Mohamed Mohd Yousuf scored 19 points and eight rebounds, and Boney Harold Watson contributed 15 points to lead the Qataris to their first win in Group H.
Skipper Jimmy Alapag paced Gilas Pilipinas with 15 points as naturalized player Marcus Douthit was limited to 10 points and five boards.
“It doesn’t matter who we play. I’m not worried about who we are playing. I’m worried about my team, it wasn’t just Marcus. We had players who weren’t ready,” said Gilas Pilipinas head coach Chot Reyes.
The Philippines and Qatar are in Group H with Kazakhstan and host South Korea.
Gilas Pilipinas takes on host South Korea on Saturday at 2 p.m. (1 p.m. in Manila) at the Samsam World Gymnasium before facing Kazakhstan on Sunday at 3:15 p.m. (2:15 p.m. in Manila).
In the round-robin format in the quarterfinals the top two teams earn spots in the crossover semifinals.
Defending champion China, Japan, Mongolia and Iran are in Group G quarterfinals.
