After an impressive debut against host Taiwan on Sunday, the Gilas Pilipinas national team absorbed a 70-82 loss to reigning champion South Korea on Monday in the 37th Williams Jones Cup at the Xinchuang Gymnasium in New Taipei City, Taiwan.
The Koreans relied on their accurate perimeter and three-point shooting all throughout the match. The Philippine team attempted to foil the onslaught of the Koreans but couldn’t match their rivals’ intensity for the duration of the second half.
It was the Koreans’ first victory after three games.
The four-time Jones Cup champion was outclassed by their rivals in the fourth quarter 16-28. A strong 11-0 run early in the fourth quarter gave the two-time Jones Cup champion Korea a 69-58 advantage.
The Filipinos could only narrow the gap to six points during the remaining minutes of the game. The Koreans’ successful free throws in the closing seconds of the match sealed their victory.
Guard Terrence Romeo, who posted 18 points in the game against Taiwan, led Gilas with 23 points while Gary David had eight points in the first half. Ranidel De Ocampo, who just recovered from a hamstring injury, scored five points in the first half.
Gilas Pilipinas will face Russia at 1 p.m. today at same venue.
