The preparations by the Gilas Pilipinas for the 2013 FIBA-Asia Men’s
Basketball Championship shift to high gear as the team leaves Tuesday for New Zealand as part of the 10-day training tour.
Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes said they will try to hit 90-percent of FIBA Asia readiness in their New Zealand odyssey highlighted by a five-day clinic under renowned coach Tab Baldwin and six tune-up matches in the cities of Napier, Wellington and Auckland.
In the second day in Napier, Reyes and his coaching staff will decide on the final 12-player lineup for the tournament to be held August 1 to 11 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay and Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Manila.
“Before we start our six-game grind, alam na namin kung sino ang nasa Final 12,” said Reyes.
He submitted a list of 24 names that includes Marcus Douthit, Junmar Fajardo, Japeth Aguilar, Beau Belga, Marc Pingris, Ranidel de Ocampo, Gabe Norwood, Jeff Chan, Gary David, Larry Fonacier, Jayson Castro, LA Tenorio and Jimmy Alapag.
They are the same players who took part in a camp in Lithuania.
“We all know that New Zealand basketball is good so we chose to train there. More importantly, the teams there are in season, so they’re in shape,” Reyes said.
