HOST Philippines will be the 13th to draw in the 27th FIBA-Asia Men’s Basketball Championship draw for squad groupings today at the Centennial Hall of the Manila Hotel.
Because of the privilege, Gilas Pilipinas can now avoid being lured into a group of stronger teams in the elimination round because all 12 slots will be already filled up before it picks which group it wishes to join.
“This is really a privilege given to the host country. We will be picking 13th. So, we can see first the first 12 teams of the four groups before we will choose which of them to join in,” said Sonny Barrios, Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas executive director.
The 2013 FIBA-Asia championship is slated on August 1 to 11 with the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City as its main venue and the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Malate, Manila, as second venue.
The top three teams in the tourney will earn a berth in the FIBA World Championship in Spain next year.
