HOST Philippines will be playing in Group A along with Jordan, Chinese Taipei and Saudi Arabia in the preliminary round of the 27th International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Asia Men’s Championship. The draw for team groupings was held at the Centennial Hall of the historic Manila Hotel on Thursday.
Included in Group B are Japan, Qatar, Lebanon and Hong Kong while Group C, considered as “Group of Death”, is composed of defending champion Iran, powerhouse China, South Korea and one qualifier from Southeast Asia.
Seeing action in Group D are Kazakhstan, India, Bahrain and another qualifier from Southeast Asia.
Gilas Pilipinas head coach Chot Reyes, who is currently in Lithuania relayed his pick to Norman Black.
“We have to respect coach Chot Reyes’ decision,” said Black.
Federation International Basketball Association FIBA-Asia Secretary General Hagop Khajirian of Lebanon said that another privilege of the host team is that it can choose its first opponent. But Black who is also a member of the Gilas Pilipinas coaching staff said that it’s up to Reyes to choose their first game assignment.
The 2013 FIBA-Asia championship is slated on August 1 to 11 with the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City as its main venue and the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Malate, Manila as second venue.
