Justine Brownlee, LA Tenorio and Japeth Aguilar delivered the needed points in the payoff period to help Barangay Ginebra pull-off a 107-95 win over Blackwater on Wednesday in the Philippine Basketball Association Season 41 Governors’ Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.
Brownlee posted 27 points on 12-of-25 shooting in the field to go along with nine rebounds and eight assists to send the Gin Kings to their third straight victory and occupy the solo third spot with 4-1 win-loss record.
Tenorio, who finished with 23 points on 10-of-12 shooting in the field plus five assists and two steals, merged with Brownlee as they led Ginebra to a blitzing run in the fourth quarter to establish a double-digit lead.
“I’m worried about this one because this is a danger game for us coming from a long break and the All-Stars,” said Ginebra mentor Tim Cone during the post game interview. “All day I was worried about this game.”
Besides Brownlee and Tenorio, the high-flying Aguilar notched 19 points including three huge baskets that propelled their lead to 97-85 with only four minutes left in the last quarter. He also had 11 rebounds and two blocks.
“I’m worried about [Eric] Dawson, worried about [Carlo] Lastimosa . The guys passed the ball well, our so-called superstars are passing the ball. Now we got a tough stretch of games and we’ll just try to see what we’re going to do with those guys,” added Cone.
Dave Marcelo and forward Joe Devance contributed nine points each also for the Gin Kings.
The Elite couldn’t take any opportunity seizing the advantage despite the errors made by the Gin Kings at the start of the fourth period.
Ginebra took a commanding 101-87 lead in the last 2:32 after Brownlee’s putback and didn’t look back.
Import Eric Dawson led Blackwater with 26 points plus 18 rebounds and seven assists, while Carlo Lastimosa had 21 points and rookie Arthur Dela Cruz added 15 points. Center JP Erram finished with 13 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks also for the Elite.
The Elite dropped to 1-3.
