SOLO leader Barangay Ginebra, already assured of a quarterfinals berth, battles anew sister team San Mig Coffee while Rain or Shine attempts to get even with Globalport tonight in the 39th Philippine Basketball Association Philippine Cup elimination round at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
The Gin Kings, who clobbered the Coffee Mixers, 86-68, in their first meeting on November 17, will try to make it twice-in-a row when they collide with San Mig Coffee again at 5:15 p.m. today. In the other match, Rain or Shine carrying a 7-3 win-loss slate, will seek to avenge its 88-90 loss to Batang Pier on December 8 when they face each other anew at 3 p.m.
With only few games left in the elimination round, Ginebra is leading with a 9-1 win-loss slate followed by Petron (8-2) and Rain or Shine (7-3). Defending champion Talk ‘N Text is not far behind with a 6-3 card while Globalport and Alaska are tied with identical 4-6 records. The Tropang Texters, however, were still battling Alaska at press time.
Being a win ahead of Petron and two wins ahead of Rain or Shine, and three wins ahead of Talk ‘N Text, coach Ato Agustin’s Gin Kings are likely to clinch either the no. 1 or no. 2 spot, which would leave the Blaze Boosters, Elasto Painters and Tropang Texters fighting for the remaining twice-to-beat incentive.
After facing San Mig Coffee today, the Gin Kings’ are left with Talk ‘N Text as their toughest foe comes January 19. Their remaining matches include Barako Bull on January 12 and Globalport on January 17.
“It’s really still very early to predict. We have still five games remaining. But yes, right now, Ginebra has the edge for the no. 1 spot,” Talk ‘N Text coach Norman Black said.
