BARANGAY Ginebra San Miguel tries to regain share of top spot when it battles Rain or Shine while cellar dwellers Globalport and Barako Bull part ways today in the 39th Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Governor’s Cup elimination round at the Alonte Sports Arena in Biñan, Laguna.

A win by the Kings over the Elasto Painters in their 5:15 p.m. encounter would enable coach Jeffrey Cariaso’s squad to tie anew Talk ‘N Text at the top of the standings. Barako Bull and Globalport, two teams locked in a three-way tie at the bottom with similar 1-5 records, seek for second win at 3 p.m.

The erstwhile co-leader Ginebra with a 4-1 card dropped to second following the Tropang Texters 97-82 triumph over Globalport at the Cuneta Astrodome on Friday. But the Kings, who last won a championship in the 2008 Fiesta Cup, expressed confidence of regaining a share of the top spot with the new system under Cariaso.

“I really believe coach Jeff [Cariaso] can lead us to the championship. I think it’s just a matter of time. I think it’s a good timing because mostly in the team are also young players, who came at a time when he [Cariaso] is just starting to build a name in the league as a coach,” said Ginebra guard LA Tenorio, a former teammate of Cariaso with Alaska incidentally under coach Tim Cone.

Ginebra will be facing Rain or Shine that posted a 123-72 win over Alaska Aces on Wednesday. The 51-point margin victory was the fourth most lopsided win in the history of the league and the biggest in 28 years since Shell whipped Tanduay, 154-100, on November 16, 1986.

“Our victory over Alaska, we will use the momentum in our game against Ginebra on Sunday,” said Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao.

Guiao will again rely on import Arizona Reid, who finished with 48 points to eclipse the 45-point previous record by Solomon Mercado in the 2010 Fiesta Conference.
