Ginebra Kings will be seeking for their sixth win when they face Air 21 Express while Meralco battles Alaska tonight in the 39th Philippine Basketball Association Philippine Cup elimination round at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
The Kings are currently occupying the second spot with a 5-1 win-loss slate and a win over the Express at 5:45 p.m. will move them closer to solo leader Petron Blaze, the only unbeaten team with a 7-0 card. Ginebra’s lone loss was at the hands of Meralco, 87-100, on December 3.
Meralco will be trying to improve its 3-4 record as it takes on Alaska Aces at 8 p.m. The Aces are carrying a 2-5 card midway in the elimination round.
Meanwhile, despite coming from an injury, Alex Cabagnot powered Petron Blaze’s recent 90-88 win over Air 21 Express to gain the Accel-PBA Press Corps. Player of the Week plum for the period of December 9 to15.
The 6’0 veteran playmaker Cabagnot fired 10 points, including the winning jumper to preserve the Blaze Boosters’ winning run in the ongoing Philippine Cup. Cabagnot bested equally tough competitors among them teammate center June Mar Fajardo, Barangay Ginebra’s Japeth Aguilar, Mac Baracael and Greg Slaughter as well as Globalport’s Solomon Mercado for the weekly citation.
He also finished with 17 points, eight rebounds and six assists to lead Petron’s 77-73 win over Meralco on Saturday in Dipolog City. With the twin victories, coach Gee Abanilla’s squad is now leading the 10-team tilt with 7-0 card.
“Alex really gave us a different dimension on our game ever since he came back, noting that he’s been working really hard on his pick and roll game,” said Abanilla, on his prized point guard.
