Ginebra to defend hold on second spot

BARANGAY Ginebra aims to cement its hold of the second spot when it faces Barako Bull while Alaska Aces battle Globalport today in the 39th Philippine Basketball Association Philippine Cup elimination round at the Araneta Coliseum.

The Ginebra Kings are currently bearing a 4-1 win-loss slate behind unbeaten and solo leader Petron Blaze (6-0). Coach Ato Agustin’s wards are seeking an important win over the Energy Cola today to avoid sharing the second spot with Rain or Shine bearing a 4-2 card. A loss by the Kings to the Energy Cola in their 8 p.m. encounter will forge a two-way tie at the second spot.

In the other match, Globalport Batang Pier will be aiming for their third victory as they meet Alaska at 5:45 p.m.

After an 87-100 loss to Meralco on December 3, Ginebra bounced back with a 97-95 triumph over defending champion Talk ‘N Text on December 8, courtesy of Japeth Aguilar’s triple with only 1.1 seconds remaining in the game.

The 6’9 Aguilar foiled Ranidel de Ocampo’s last-ditch effort to save the day for the Kings. He finished with 21 points, 12 rebounds and seven block shots to hand the Tropang Texters their second setback in five matches.

Barako Bull, on other hand, is in a three-game losing slump after a 2-0 start. Its recent defeat was at the hands of sister team Air 21, 77-92, on December 7.
