A 14-year-old student from the Rizal High School in Pasig City in Metro Manila died after she fell down the stairs while taking a selfie last Monday.
She was with a friend when the incident took place.
But the relatives of the student said they received conflicting reports about her death.
The girl’s uncle said he first got a call from the student’s adviser, saying she was rushed to the Rizal Medical Center after feeling dizzy. The uncle said that when he arrived at the hospital, his niece was already dead.
Senior Supt. Mario Rariza, chief of Pasig police, said an autopsy revealed that the girl sustained broken bones and a head injury. A rib had also pierced her kidney.
The girl’s family said the death of the victim may not have been due to the fall. They are also considering pressing charges against the school.
The mother is asking witnesses to come forward and shed light on what happened.
The father asked the school administration to cooperate in the investigation. He also decried what he said was the school’s poor response to the incident.
Rizal High School Principal Virginia Membrebe insisted that the fall caused the victim’s death.
Membrebe said the victim and her friend may have sneaked out of the classroom while their adviser was out.
She and the regional director of the Department of Education have visited the wake of the student. The student’s family has received P10,000.
The student’s remains were brought to Laurel, Batangas.
Pasig City was earlier named by Time magazine as the selfie capital of the world, along with Makati City, also in Metro Manila.
