Global Cebu FC plays its first real home game as it battles rival Ceres-Negros FC in the second Visayas Clasico of the Philippines Football League (PFL) today at the Cebu City Sports Center.
The champions of United Football League’s last two seasons meet head-on at 7 p.m., with Global Cebu enjoying the familiarity of its original home pitch after taking on previous opponents at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium in Manila.
Global assistant coach Marjo Allado knows that they are the clear underdogs in the much-awaited match of the Visayan powerhouse teams.
“Ceres is the favorite (to win). We’ll just do what we can against them,” said Allado in the post-game presser following their 2-2 draw with Kaya-FC Makati on Sunday.
Global absorbed a 0-1 loss to Ceres Negros in their first encounter last June 3 at the packed Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod City.
With the Cebuano hopefuls expected to fill the 5,000-seater stadium, however, No. 3 Global could reverse the result this time around to tally its fifth win in nine games and further pull away from Ceres in the standings.
Meanwhile, Ceres midfielder Stephan Shrock looks forward to meeting again the Cebu-based booters.
“It’s always special when we face Global,” said Schrock after their 5-2 rout of Stallion Laguna FC on Saturday.
“We work for these games, we want to enjoy, and we want to win these games. That’s what were trying to do,” added the former Azkals standout.
The Yellow Busmen rode a triumphant three-game home stand in the past one and a half week, winning against Kaya, 3-1, before crushing Stallion Laguna in their last two outings with the first one a 5-1 romp.
Currently No. 4 with 13 points, Ceres seeks to overtake Global as it guns for its fourth straight win in as many games.
Meanwhile, Stallion and Kaya Makati aim to bounce back from their respective dismal showings in their previous matches when they collide at 4 p.m. at the Biñan Football Stadium.
The booters from Laguna suffered blowout defeats to Ceres though they are still ahead of cellar-dweller Ilocos United FC with three points.
Kaya, on the other hand, conceded a late equalizer to Global courtesy of Sekou Sylla as the Makati-based squad settled for its second stalemate on its home turf.
