Global denies Ceres PFL top spot

Global Cebu FC rode on a strong first half as it blanked rival Ceres Negros FC, 2-0, in the last elimination round game of the Philippines Football League (PFL) on Tuesday night at the Cebu City Sports Center.

The People’s Club scored two goals just 33 minutes into the match as it prevailed in the final installment of the Visayas Clasico in the eliminations.

Global Cebu evened its head-to-head results against Ceres Negros in their four encounters, with both clubs having won two home games apiece.

The Cebuanos though remained on the fourth spot heading into the Finals Series with 47 points built on 13 wins and eight draws against seven losses.

The Yellow Busmen, on the other hand, squandered a chance to snatch the pole position anew as they settled for the second seed with 57 points on a 17-6-5 record.

The following are the pairings in the semifinals, set to begin on December 2: Global will battle top club FC Meralco Manila while Ceres will face No. 3 finisher Kaya FC-Makati.

Looking to avenge their finals loss in the 20th Singapore Cup, Akbar Nawas’ men had a searing start to the delight of their home fans.

The host squad’s aggressive start paid off when Spanish striker Rufo Sanchez volleyed home a low cross by Trinidadian forward Darryl Roberts from the left flank seven minutes past the kickoff.

Cebu captain and Azkals stalwart Misagh Bahadoran doubled the lead in the 33rd minute with a screamer that slipped past goalkeeper Louie Casas.

A scoreless second half has ensured Global’s victory.
