Shu Sasaki struck a brace as Global Cebu FC returned to the winning track with a 3-0 drubbing of Ilocos United FC in the Philippines Football League (PFL) on Sunday evening at the President Elpidio Quirino Stadium in Bantay, Ilocos Sur.
Sasaki hit two goals within five minutes in Global Cebu’s first half barrage to lift the Visayan powerhouse to third place with 10 points and improve its record to 3-1-1 win-draw-loss.
“We worked hard and we worked together. We just kept playing good,” said Sasaki.
“It was a good result for us. We played good football especially in the first half,” said Global interim coach Marjo Allado, whose team dealt with late game lapses in its disappointing losses in the recent past.
Former Azkals standout Paul Mulders notched the first goal for the Cebuanos with a successful penalty kick in the 23rd minute.
Japanese forward Sasaki showed his arsenal two minutes later, firing away goals in the 25th and 30th.
Ilocos United displayed its signature defensive prowess but failed to notch a mark in the scoreboard in the second half as the newcomers from Vigan sank to the cellar after absorbing their fourth defeat in five matches.
Meanwhile, Stallion Laguna FC and Davao Aguilas FC settled for a goalless draw at the Biñan Football Stadium.
Davao Aguilas’ Serbian striker Nikola Grubjesic hit the crossbar with a missed penalty shot in the 69th minute.
Once again, Stallion Laguna squandered a chance to nail its breakthrough win at its home turf as it moved to the seventh spot with two points.
Davao remained one step higher than the Laguna-based booters with an advantage in goal difference.
