Global FC wrapped up its campaign in the first round of elimination of the United Football League (UFL) with a 3-3 draw against defending champion Ceres La Salle FC.
Global dictated the pace of the match in the opening minutes with two quick strikes by Serbian midfielder Ivan Petrovic and Azkal Misagh Bahadoran.
Scoreboard leader Adrian Gallardo Valdes replied in the 44th minute after receiving a pass from Paul Mulders cutting the deficit down to 2-1 at the break.
Japanese winger Hikaru Minegeshi extended Global’s lead to 3-1 in the 59th minute off a rebound shot from a crazy sequence inside the box.
But Ceres registered two more goals courtesy of Gallardo Valdes in the 77th (his second) followed by Bienvenido Maranon’s long shot in the 78th to ensure the draw.
Global head coach Leigh Manson expressed disappointment citing fatigue as one of the reasons of their breakdown in the final stretch.
“Obviously, I’m disappointed to lose a 3-1 lead. I’d like to think that we could’ve seen out the final 20 minutes,” he said.
But Manson remained optimistic of their title bid this season after Global kept its hold of the top spot with 31 points for 10 wins and a draw.
“Well, the positive thing is we’re still on top of the table after the first round. If we can repeat what we’ve done, we will still be champions,” he said.
Ceres La Salle is No.2 with 28 points off nine wins, a draw and a loss.
