Global Cebu FC begins its playoff campaign in the 20th RHB Singapore Cup when it faces Boeung Ket FC of Cambodia in the first leg of their quarterfinals match-up on Tuesday at the Jalan Besar Stadium in Singapore.
Kickoff is set at 7:30 p.m.
Global Cebu entered the quarterfinals as it outgunned S.League side Geylang International on penalties, 3-2, following a 4-4 standoff in regulation plus the extra time.
Head coach Akbar Nawas is optimistic of his team’s chances but he is also aware of their opponent’s caliber.
“It is not going to be easy but we have prepared well. Hopefully, we can go out there and get off to a winning start against Boeung Ket,” said Nawas in an interview with sleague.com.
The former Tampines Rovers coach stays confident despite his squad trooping to its third game in six days.
“If we look at it, it could mean that the players are in a sharper condition. On the flipside, it could however mean that the players will suffer from fatigue but we’ll see.
Boeung Ket, on the other hand, routed Warriors FC, 4-1, to book its ticket to the playoffs.
Captain Khoun Laboravy netted a hat-trick in the preliminary round victory while Nigerian winger Esoh Omogba displayed his ability of causing problems with his pace and trickery.
Global is a regular competitor in the prestigious Cup for the past four years, with its best finish at fourth place in 2013 and 2015.
Boeung Ket, meanwhile, is playing in the annual tournament for only the second time after a short-lived campaign in 2013.
The winner of this two-legged tie will advance to the semifinals, wherein it will battle either Hougang United or Nagaworld FC.
